On reddit someone posted a made up Trudeau quote and everyone is upvoting it. I commented that he didn't say it and we shouldn't promote made up shit just because we agree with the sentiment.
I was told I had to *prove* he didn't say it. And just the fact that there is no one reporting that he said it --something super inflammatory -- was not proof. It was also suggested that I must support Trump if I disagree with the made up facts.
That's.... that's not how this work.

@maj I have my differences with PM Trudeau, but it's hard to think of anything super inflammatory that he's said. With respect to President Trump, he probably thinks some disparaging things, but he knows to be careful about what he says, for the good of the country.
Even his comment about the #TrumpTariffs being a dumb thing to do was directly preceded by saying Pres. Trump is a "very smart guy".
@mpjgregoire Yeah and him saying it was dumb (good on him) was headline news.
Anyway, I'm not going to spread the bullshit by repeating the false quote but it's so disheartening that *everyone* seems to care way more about inflammatory agreement than any actual facts / truth.
It's been depressing to realize that the left is just as bad as the right.
@maj Did you ever read the Solzhenitsyn quote about the line between good and evil? https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/450864-the-line-separating-good-and-evil-passes-not-through-states
Anyway, when I consider myself, or my own ingroup, I see how the temptation to be careless with the truth exists, and I try to be more alert against it; but I also try to be understanding when my outgroup succumbs. It's easy to believe the thing you want to be true.
@mpjgregoire @maj that thinking is scientifically proven: https://overcast.fm/+AACuhsfFuUQ
@mpjgregoire Yeah, it's also about evoking the correct feeling.
There may not actually be children identifying as cats at school, but that inspires the *correct* level of outrage over an issue that otherwise wouldn't bother people ("sure, some kids have a different name at school whatever").
So the people pushing the falsehoods are justified in spreading lies because that's what they are forced to do in order to have the "right" reaction.
