M. Grégoire

I'm on the Fediverse because I don't think a global moderation policy is desirable. People want different things, so they ought to be able to form different communities, each with its own policies and ethos; the communities should allow interconnection as a rule, but it's right and natural that some communities don't want to interact, and that some should be shunned... Little platoons, subsidiarity.

But I wonder if I'd have more fun on BlueSky? The discussion of on the Fediverse is almost entirely conducted by people convinced that Mr. Poilievre is a mini-Trump and that conservatives in general are evil.

When I read posts like: mementomori.social/@rolle/1134 , I wonder, Where's my crowd? I'm not that interested in Messrs Hamill, King, Torvalds or Sir Tim. Where's ? ? ? ? ?

@acoyne is here, but he posts rarely.

Memento moriRoni Laukkarinen (@rolle@mementomori.social)Mark Hamill joined Bluesky. Stephen King joined Threads. The Fediverse has Linus Torvalds and Tim Berners-Lee. #SocialMedia #SocialWeb #Bluesky #Threads #Mastodon

I should also mention @yuanyi_z , who last posted here over a year ago.

Well, the community I want to follow is mostly at Twitter, and the model I support is here on the Fediverse. Not much point in adding Bluesky at this point, as it lacks both so far as I can see.

@mpjgregoire @acoyne

I'm not a conservative, but I would like to see more posting from thoughtful* conservatives here.

*By "thoughtful" I mean not Twitter style LETZ OWN THE LIBZ outpourings.

@jemmesedi @mpjgregoire @acoyne The thoughtful conservative is a mythical figure, like Sasquatch.

@alfredo
Maybe merely extinct now that Sir Roger Scruton has left us.

PP is very much following the Trump playbook: from juvenile personal attacks to ignoring global warming as a critical issue, to rubbing shoulders with neoNazis.

As a former federal PC party member, I have nothing but contempt and disgust for the current leadership. I am definitely not part of that crowd.

If there are some decent members left in that party, I sure would love to hear from them.

@mpjgregoire Poilievre is by no means a "moni-Trump" but he is by no means a conservative in the traditional Canadian sense either. If anything he is very much in the same model as JD Vance. I followed the CPC leadership contest quite closely and there are many parallels there.

I an not one to ascribe conservatism as traditionally defined to evil, but the word and the political movement today are tragically polluted and corrupted. The most prominent contemporary "conservative" figures globally are universally regressing into reactionary authoritarian territory. There are precious few who still strive to *conserve* peace, order and good government any more. That modicum of common ground they had with progressive folk has almost completely disappeared and it's a damn shame.

@mpjgregoire I agree on the last point ;) but Polly is certainly no Trump, though like most conservative politicians around these days he tries to act it in ways, especially since sizeable portions of bases are demanding Trumps and because clearly in general that's where the winning energy is at the moment on the right-wing—anyone after power on that side here in Canada, where the cultural and economic osmosis from below us is strong, is at least gonna talk the talk a bit.

@keithzg Mr. Trump taught politicians the power of an insulting nickname, and so we'll see more of that, alas.

To understand Mr. Poilievre's ascent, consider the prior CPC leaders: Andrew Scheer, a father of five, former Speaker; Erin O'Toole, basically a centrist and looking like a jolly grandfather. They both lost to Mr. Trudeau's wedge politics. So the party wanted someone scrappy, aggressive, not afraid to look like a jerk sometimes. And here we are.

@mpjgregoire That last bit, of course, is precisely the appeal of Trump to many of his voters! And the media ecosystem which crosses the border helps feed the appetite for that tone and tenor.

(The ways that political winds and trends parallel or contrast with the respective situations of parties on this side of the border creates some fun interference patterns! The Democratic conundrum is largely that of the LPC, while the CPC got a chance to have meaningful open leadership contests more recently than the two centrist parties or the GOP have. There's a point I have to make about how that all interplays but somehow it's nearly 07:30 here and I need to sleep, and articulation of it is eluding me!)
