Evan Prodromou

Amidst all the Marie Antoinette privileged bullshit on the Internet, there is nothing quite as obscene to me as climate doomerism.

@evan Meaning people who say "we're past the tipping point anyway, so fuck it"? I'm not quite there, but I do feel like I don't know how we get there from here - especially when so much public policy is generating carbon dioxide. I feel like fission, bridging to sustainable fusion, is the best way to reduce emissions, but I'm not sure my voice matters in that.

@dneary My "I don't like climate doomerism" t-shirt has people sharing a lot of doomerism already prescribed by my shirt.

@dneary It's not a game you win or lose. Every single thing we do to reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change will save some of the hundreds of millions of human lives and billions of other living things that will otherwise be lost. People around the world are doing the work and they deserve our support.

@dneary if you need help understanding what needs to be done, I highly recommend Project Drawdown:

Personally, I am tired of the extremism on both sides.

The "if we are all going to die, so why do anything?" attitude is a direct response to "if we don't go back to the stone age, we are all going to die!" attitude.

And we also have the "boy who cried wolf" problem. The world was supposed to end 40 years ago. And then 30 years ago. And then 20 year ago. And 10 years ago. And in 10 years. Or in 20 years.

Even if the wolf eventually shows up, no one believes them now. They've lost all credibility.

I am not denying climate change and the effects of human activity on the climate. Science shows that to be true. We do need to treat the environment better and we need to stop pouring toxins and pollutants into the environment. And we need a plan. But all of this doom and gloom in both directions is getting old and people are getting tired of it.
Part of the problem is that a lot of this climate change stuff is virtue signaling. They keep their oil-based life with their oil-based plastics and oil-based phone and oil-based wardrobe and buy stuff that requires oil to transport. But on Instagram, they are saving the environment?
