I don't think mobile providers provide email addresses today? Not in Canada at least.

But fixed line internet providers do. Which is kind of wacky when you think about it.

@evan has a poll on whether mobile phone companies should provide fediverse accounts cosocial.ca/@evan/111607888546

@boris @evan i think it comes from the days when email was not something you could just get from anyone. It was a value-add like USENET access and so forth.

Personally, I don't think ISPs should give you anything except a pipe and possibly DNS. Everything else should be up to the user.

@stinerman I think this is what @evan is getting at with his poll :)

How does one distribute social web accounts to millions as an open standard?

Should this be in the same class as email?

And service providers may be a path to this.

Because right now, your phone operating system owns those accounts (AppleID and Google).

I'm having an extremely negative reaction in thinking about Canada's mobile providers in this context :)

@boris @stinerman I'd say that, unlike Apple and Google, they are actively regulated utilities. But, unfortunately, the regulation isn't that effective.

ISP-provided anything other than connectivity is a lockin trap
