It's weird how people don't make the connection between strife in a distant land and popularity of its cuisine in North America and Europe.

If you've got a new arepa place or a Yemeni or Burmese restaurant starting up near you, that's not a coincidence. That's refugees making a place for themselves far from home.

@evan I had never thought of that! Interesting to think about how Chinese and Indian restaurants, and Irish pubs, are ubiquitous worldwide. Does that say something about the nature of Irish, Indian, and Chinese culture that generated more expats?

@dneary the counter hypothesis that the popularity of Irish pubs was completely unrelated to the massive waves of emigration from Ireland in the last 150+ years seems very unlikely.

@evan I was thinking more in the meta - a reference to the strife. I am aware of the economic, political, and social conditions that led to Irish emigration between 1700 and 2000, but was wondering if there are general lessons to learn from the examples of mass emigration and cultural diaspora.
