Can Palestinians leave Gaza voluntarily?

This was interesting. As I mentioned in the comments, the Israeli government has a new department dedicated to "voluntary" departure of Palestinians to other countries in the world. I don't think starving people, under bombardment, have any kind of realistic consent, especially when lacking a right of return. So, I'd say no.

@evan I think you might want to reformulate that? Yes, many Palestinians have left Gaza for the same reasons my Norwegian ancestors left for the new world. Others leave in terror of Israeli butchery. What does “voluntary” mean? Are you asking in the specific context of the 2024/5 slaughter? Are you talking about individual movements or ethnic cleansing?

@timbray Thanks. You're touching on a lot of the ideas I'm interested in discussing! I usually try not to clarify my questions, but here we go: I am very much focused on the idea presented by the ultranationalists in the Israeli cabinet of "voluntary transfer".

CNN · Israel approves controversial proposal to facilitate emigration of Palestinians from GazaBy Nadeen Ebrahim

@evan The trouble is that the poll risks creating the impression that the Smotrich/Trump lethal racist ethnic-cleansing proposal are a thing that reasonable people can argue about the benefits/costs of. I decline to join such a discussion.

@timbray fair and appreciated.

@timbray I probably should be more careful with it. Personally, I can't understand why people in two countries seem to think this is a perfectly fine plan, and people in other countries refuse to get involved. I probably gave the plan too much of the benefit of the doubt.

@evan anyone can do anything voluntarily....

When Israelis refer to voluntary transfer, they are using the word "voluntary" to refer to something inherently involuntary. "Make them want to leave" is the entire idea, and an oxymoron because if someone wanted to do something you wouldn't have to make them do it. If you really want to get into the semantics of it, Israelis assume that Palestinians want to leave a home that gets bombed constantly, so they constantly bomb their homes. That assumption is false, though, and this thinking shows plainly that they are settlers on stolen land, because any indigenous person would sooner die than leave their home.

@evan And also, no country in the world is offering to facilitate ethnic cleansing by being the expulsion target. And also, it's a fucking racist fucking genocidal outrage.

@evan

Bibi still has to come up with about six million so he too, can pay off El Salvador to take Palestinians..............

@LaNaehForaday El Salvador's current authoritarian president is part of the Palestinian diaspora. I'm not sure what that would mean for your proposal.

@evan Right. It’s a bit like my neighbour voluntarily agreeing to leave their house when I’ve doused it with gasoline and am standing outside with a box of matches.
