Troubling things going on at Mastodon HQ. They've appointed board members Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter, VC person) & Amir Ghavi (lawyer advising on blockchain & AI) 🤮

Fediverse needs good alternatives to Mastodon, IMHO best option would be GoToSocial, due to enter beta later this year.

To help GTS:

@FediTips I dunno, this feels a little knee-jerk reaction-y to me.

@OldManToast @FediTips It's not, we have seen it many times before that potentially great services shit themselves into the ground and this could very well be yet another example.

Of course, they can prove me and many others wrong by their actions down the road.

@joeo10 @OldManToast

Yeah, obviously do hope Mastodon prove us all wrong! 😅

Thing is, many people started supporting the Fediverse and Mastodon precisely because they were concerned by behaviour of VC-funded platforms which inevitably turned to crap as VCs demanded ever more growth.

If Mastodon starts getting into VC money etc, then the whole reason for volunteers supporting it starts to disappear.

Eugen turned down VC involvement in 2022, so why is he appointing a board like this now?

@nikclayton

It's fine if they want to set up a non-profit to receive donations.

But there is no reason to appoint the founder of Twitter and a blockchain/AI person to the board of the non-profit. It is their presence that is the problem.
