@timbray I’m wary of trusting them to crack open encrypted messages on my behalf.

@JasonPunyon @timbray sounds like it’s somehow gotten even worse

@JasonPunyon @timbray i self host a few beeper bridges on my matrix server. works pretty well.

@timbray I was in beta, and thought the whole thing was an abysmal experience.

@timbray Hmm. I'm curious to see how it all works and whether it catches on, but I'm wary that it's free (with optional subscription). If it's free, you're the product etc. So what are they getting out of it with the free version? I don't see a direct indication of that on the website.

@timbray I expect I'll hear about this again soon when Facebook blocks it

@timbray Is it a distributed open platform with open source reference implementations? No? Then also check out matrix.org. It has gateways too! And is better quality and more established for more than a decade.

Don't make the mistake of stumbling into another proprietary product running unknown code and that might be bought out and scuttled at a moment's notice ala Twitter.

@matt_panaro @timbray Is that a positive or a negative? I'm assuming it's still trending proprietary...

@jaymcor
What do you mean by gateways? If you mean what the Matrix.org website calls bridges, note that a ton of the ones listed there were written by the people at Beeper!
