I saw a post here talking about the carbon price as “one of the few good things the Trudeau gov’t has done”. So off the top of my head, here’s some accomplishments of the Trudeau gov’t.
- added gender identity protections to the human rights act
- heat pump and EV incentives
- Canada dental plan, enabling over 500K Canadians to get needed treatment
- $10/day daycare
- national school lunch program
- Canada Child Benefit
- conversion therapy ban
Some more accomplishments of the Trudeau gov’t:
- COVID pandemic policy that held deaths to a fraction of the USA’s
- greenwashing ban
- strict labeling and recall rules for “natural” health scam products
- capital gains tax increase
- national pharmacare for diabetes drugs and contraceptives
- reversed Harper’s denial of citizenship to children of Canadians born abroad
And that’s just off the top of my head.
A few good things eh.
Apparently there's another round of op-eds today declaring that Trudeau needs to focus on "delivering for Canadians", not "just comms".
I think that's bullshit. Trudeau *has been* "delivering for Canadians". The problem is that no-one knows what his gov't has done, b/c the national news media doesn't like talking about it or crediting the gov't.
"Do good things and stay quiet and magically people will notice, credit you, and vote for you" is BS. Didn't work for Biden, won't work for Trudeau.
@npilon Disgusted by the Trudeau bashing. He also reversed Harper's raising the age for receiving OAS. Began to address climate change with the progressive carbon tax which benefits low income Canadians. Poilievre will give tax cuts to the rich and impose austerity on the most vulnerable. He must be stopped!
@Vegematic I posted in part because there's also a tendency among progressives to over-sell how "reasonable" we're being about politicians, and to ensure we're mixing in some bad when talking about the good.
We don't actually need to do that. It's ok to just talk about policy wins.
@npilon
The liberals have a hostile media problem that prevents dissemination or twists positive action into false harm for the average canuck. They need to figure a way around it, and subsidizing Postmedia is the opposite. They could be here in the fediverse spreading their messages, but I don't see it.
@NMBA they're stuck in a mid-2010s social media / news media mindset, though there's definitely some shifts showing.
@reay @mhoye I think a lot of progressives focus on the bad of the Liberals with some sort of notion that it’ll get moderate/swingy voters to listen to them and back more left-wing parties. But it doesn’t work!
A lot of Poilievre’s support is people who don’t know what he’s planning to cut, or don’t know those things were introduced by Trudeau. You can see it in polls!
@npilon Hopefully we'll see more during the election campaign.
@npilon conversion therapy ban
I was listing to Ling on Canadaland scoffing about a clip of Trudeau saying he’d have our backs. He literally asked “who is this for?” It was for me! Who would I rather vote for: the guy who says he’ll protect my family or the dude who’s wants us to die? I turned the show off. Utter garbage. Ling has his head up his ass half the time.
@npilon sorry about the tangent but I think it doesn’t help that the media dismiss Trudeau’s message because it doesn’t speak to them personally.
@monicarooney that felt wrong to me too when I noticed Michael de Adder doing it on Twitter. And I don’t like all the bile at “sunny days” messaging now. It almost feels like they’ll only accept a government that’s a stern parent - a father, dourly lecturing about why you must eat your veggies and no TV until after homework.
NM that that’s a shitty way to raise a kid too.
@monicarooney that’s exactly the shit I’m talking about, eh! It’s okay to say that politicians have done good things. You’re not letting down the side in the fight for better things. Yeah even if they got dragged kicking and screaming into it. In the final tally, that’s a mark in favor.
This more dour than thou shit has real consequences. People lose faith in progress. It’s what makes slimy anger merchants appealing.
@npilon its not a national media anymore.
It’s corporate media. Mostly owned by rich American fucks. Looking to wreak our healthcare and eviction amd make us more like foul America. So they can make money off wrecking our health care.
Canada for assholes who want to be American.
#corporatemediafailsus
@davidfowler @npilon Why are we still giving corporate media our eyes and ears? Simple action everyone can choose to take: stop watching and listening. You won’t miss anything because the corporate media has nothing useful to offer.
@npilon
Adding to your extensive list: non-partisan Senate appointments and legalizing weed.
@npilon
and he didn't scream and yell about it!
