Hardest thing I've had to write in quite some time:
https://about.iftas.org/2025/02/06/funding-challenges-and-the-future-of-our-work/
tl;dr - we are running out of money and will not be able to pay our bills in April. As such, unless we can secure funding by end of February, we will be closing down some services and re-examining our scope of activities.
@jaz I've gotta ask: why isn't FediCheck already open source? Alternately, why should we trust a proprietary product to support our open source projects, when it is a centralized single point of failure that could disappear this quickly?
Honestly I assumed that as a non-profit part of the Fediverse, IFTAS work was all open source, and I was shocked and disappointed to discover that it is not.
@skyfaller @jaz actually, you don't have to ask. This is out of line as a response to a critical announcement.
@evan @jaz I actually do need to ask because the answers are important to deciding whether to:
- assist IFTAS, e.g. by donating
- use IFTAS products in the future
This may be a sad and uncomfortable time to ask/answer questions, but I don't think IFTAS or the Fediverse would be well-served by ignoring such questions.
If nothing else, there may not be a future time to discuss these questions if IFTAS ceases to exist.
@skyfaller @evan @jaz I'm very sad to hear this news, and hope that something can be done. There is some conversation in social.coop about whether we can help.
I can understand how open source wasn't part of the plan for IFTAS as a non-profit, since the value it is offering was in the services themselves. If you need help in evaluating whether some portions of the application(s) can be safely open sourced please get in touch ehs@pobox.com
@edsu @skyfaller @evan FediCheck was always intended to be released as a self-hostable community tool, we're working on putting something out that hopefully others can use. Will need a maintainer... - or we just post the code and people can do with it as they please.
