I loved this postcard of our bison herd at the SFO Airport Museum but I wish it had an ActivityPub ID
@evan this is the second time you've mentioned this concept. For me, a basic low tier user of mastodon, can you explain what you mean by this?
@OldManToast @thisisaaronland did an amazing project coding ActivityPub identities for the entire collection of the SFO Airport Museum. Blog post here: https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/blog/2024/03/12/activitypub/
@OldManToast @thisisaaronland the joke is that as we stand in 2024, I am one of the few people on the planet who look at an inanimate object and say, "That thing should be on the Fediverse." So when I get a chance to do it, *and that thing is actually on the Fediverse*, it is wonderful.
@OldManToast @thisisaaronland unfortunately I haven't gotten good at finding the IDs. I think @onview posts them regularly, but otherwise I don't know how to find them. Others have shown some to me, though.
@evan @OldManToast @onview as mentioned for objects on display “it’s complicated” for museum-reasons no one outside the museum hula hoop should ever have to think about / for objects on the collection website the IDs and addresses are included in the metadata section / aliases for accession numbers are forthcoming which will not solve but ameliorate the first problem / meanwhile my kingdom for a mailto:-style URI scheme for AP addresses…
@evan @OldManToast there is a whole body of work from the before times about and around the idea of “social objects” / sadly those efforts mostly sputtered out for reasons best saved for tears-in-beers hour / but in the meantime it remains a conversation worth revisiting
@thisisaaronland @OldManToast I really like the work @tomcoates did at Thington with putting objects on Twitter. I hope we get a chance to do similar projects at @swf .
@evan @thisisaaronland I think I remember seeing something about this before, I'll have to read up on it. On a much smaller scale, I do think the fediverse needs something that helps collectors organize, display and share their collections of choice. Looking forward to reading the blog article to learn more about the goals and implementation
