Tomorrow I start my first graduate school class in almost a year. I am in a masters of computer science program at Georgia Tech. Last year, when I started the activitypub book, I did a semester of special project work focussed on the book. But for the two last semesters, I've been withdrawn from classes. With the book soon to be published, I'll be taking a new course.
I was really worried about not finishing this program. I have so much going on in my life. It would be really easy to justify, taking another semester off, and then another, and so on. but getting a masters degree is one of my big life goals. & I have to say my last two classes at Georgia Tech were exceptionally good and changed how I practice computer science and software development.
I put a lot of work into making a graduate program fit into my personal schedule. Instead of listening to podcasts, I started listening to textbooks and academic papers. Read out to me on my phone. instead of watching television, I watched video lectures from my classes. I fit my coursework around my regular day, and I made it work. Even though I had a full-time job and a family and household to take care of.
I hope I can remember all my tricks to keep my time and focus in check. Currently, I have my full-time job of course, my family, of course, my work on the social Web community group at W3C maintaining the activitypub spec & on top of it all my work on end to end encrypted activitypub DMs, part of the summer of protocols program. It feels like there's not enough time in the day, but I guess it's important to prioritize the things that matter to me.
I'm worried that at my age, if I put off my masters degree classes, any further, I'll never pick them back up. it took so much work to find and get into this program and get the credits that I've done so far, I would hate to lose that momentumAnd the chance to have that achievement
I finished my MA last year after many false starts. Stick with it and see it through!
