Whoa ... this surprised me:
There's AN ALGORITHM operating on mastodon.social? Anybody know more about this? #mastodon

@deborahh Yes, the explore tab shows what is trending on that instance only. It is there just as a matter of interest and does not affect your home feed, your local feed, or your federated feed.

Ottawa place doesn't have an Explore page that shows first, which mastodon.social does have.
When I click on the globe icon, I get a view comparable to ottawa.place. Details in alt text.
Thanks for clearing that up!
@deborahh Some Mastodon clients will label that view "trending" to make it even more clear.

@deborahh @BrianJohnson if you click on the "hashtag" icon on the right on Ottawa.place, you'll see the same thing, they just have an older version of the UI.
